On the Fly Keyboard Programming
Several times I’ve been given the local repeater's information and perhaps I’m going to be in the area for a only few hours or maybe I’m not sure if I can hit it and want a quick way to try. Here is an easy to remember solution.
We will assume that you are familiar with the Keys and Functions.
Enter VFO mode
Select A or B to program in
Select the correct BAND
Enter the frequency you want to try
<Menu> <13> <Menu> (enter tone, if req'd) <Menu>
<Menu> <26> <Menu> (check/change offset) <Menu>
<Menu> <25> <Menu> (check/change offset) <Menu>
You are done.
You can “store” one frequency in each A and B and the UV-5R will retain these until the information is overwritten.
If you are entering a Simplex frequency, you need to reset the options of Menus 13 & 25 to OFF.
I remember the MENU #’s this way... 13, 26, 25
Unlucky Number =
Double Unlucky =
Back Off (-1) = 13

Cut the 7 steps out and put in your wallet for later use.

Changing Channel Data
It is possible to change the TRANSMIT settings of an existing channel by making the change then re-saving the data. It is NEVER possible to change any of the RECEIVE settings without deleting the entire channel [menu, 28] and starting over.
This radio saves the receive data and the transmit data separately in the same channel number. Everything about the receive conditions must be set and saved first (which is all you need for a basic simplex channel with no Tx tone etc.)
All TRANSMIT settings (including any tone, code or having the Tx frequency showing in the display) must be set and saved separately to create a complete channel. If you were to save updated data to that same channel a second or third time, you would ONLY replace the previous TRANSMIT data without ever altering the saved RECEIVE data.
If the RECEIVE channel is improperly programmed, the channel must be totally deleted and reprogrammed.
Important note:
So, it really is possible to change the Tx tone, but it is quite a bit more complicated than just changing the menu setting. You need to:

Save the complete transmit data back to the same channel.

0 SQL Squelch Level- Squelch silences the receiver when there is no signal.
- UHF Sensitivity can be varied from .1 to .3 mV
- VHF Sensitivity is constant. 1 > 9 = .1 mV
- Level 0 = Open Squelch
- There is little difference between settings.
Level 5 is recommended.

- Amount of frequency change when using Up/Down arrows or when scanning in VFO Mode.

2 TXP Transmit Power
- High = 5 watts Low = 1 watt
- Use Low power unless necessary.
- Power can be toggled Hi/Lo by pressing the [ # ] key,
however, Dual Standby (Menu 7) must be OFF.

3 SAVE Battery Save
- Sleep Ratio to acknowledge an RX signal.
- The higher number increases the RX sleep cycle, but you may miss the first few syllables before the RX opens.

without the Shift (25) or Offset (26) functions. This may be more reliable, since only the "A" display works for programming memories, thus, the radio can only remember one offset value for programming purposes. |

a.) UV5R series - Press VFO/MR button
b.) UV82 - Turn radio OFF, then Press/Hold MENU button during PowerON.
2. Select Display A (this is a must)
a.) UV5R/GT3 - Press [A/B] and select the Upper Display.
b.) UV82 - Press [EXIT A/B] and select the Upper Display.
3. Disable TDR (Dual Watch/Dual RX) which toggles between A and B.
Press [Menu] 7 [Menu]
Select OFF
Press [Menu] [Exit]
4. Delete Prior Data from the channel to be programmed.

Baofeng UV-82L review comparison

Baofeng UV82 - Some Disappointing Facts
Again, nothing is perfect in the radio world. After my last video on the common issues with Baofeng GT3, B580T, UV5R, UVB5 and some other brands such as Wouxun and TYT, here is another small complaint. The dual PTT has an issue with normal headsets and the FM broadcast has a rather bad temper when interrupted. These are not major issues for the operation of the radio but some niggles that I find frustrating personally. On the positive side the UV82 has clear audio and large buttons on the keypad. It is a well liked radio after all.
